Lakeland Heat fight off late charge and continue winning ways

The Lakeland Heat survived a brief comeback scare from the Edmonton Warriors and defeated the city team 10-8 for their 11th win of the season on Sunday afternoon.

Junior B Heat lacrosse coach Dennis Hodinsky said he was happy with the final minutes of the game defensively, despite getting off their game.

“We let them come back in the game in the second period with some penalty trouble a little bit, they outscored us in the second period and we got off our game. Then, we finally started to get back into our game,” said Hodinsky.

“I was pretty happy the final minute and a half the boys played some solid defence and played a lot more mature at the end of the game.”

Up by a score of 9-5 at the second intermission, the Warriors battled to make the game more interesting, as the Heat only scored three goals in the final two periods.

They shut the door when it mattered most and stifled a late Warriors charge to get the victory.

The Heat are taking care of the lower ranked teams so far.

Wednesday saw a 21-6 road win for the Heat against the Wainwright Wolfpack.

They sit first on the North East side, while the Vermilion Roar is in second with 14 points and the Lloydminster Xtreme in third with 12 points in three fewer games.

Mitchell Bibeau continues to soar ahead in the Jim Andrews division with his scoring totals. He leads the Heat with 61 points, including 45 goals.

Isaac Brown is second in team scoring with 33 points, followed closely by Jaydon Frey with 32 points.

Goaltender Tyler Wareham also boasts the best save percentage of any goalie in the league who has started more than one game. In 12 starts, Wareham has 0.919 save percentage, seven points ahead of Vermilion goalie Matthew Murphy.
