Hayley Wickenheiser and hockey heroes coming to Cold Lake
Hockey Heroes will be lacing up on Saturday for a charity game to benefit the Cold Lake Food Bank and the Cold Lake Legion. Lieutenant Colonel Forrest Rock says the event will be filled with family friendly entertainment.
“This year marks the 100th anniversary of 401 Tactical Squadron, where I actually work. They have a legacy of giving back to the community in some form.” Wanting to honour the squadron, the base wanted to host a high calibre event. Partnering with the 4-Wing Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC), “we came up with the idea to have a charity celebrity hockey game.”
There’s three main ways to get involved, explained LCol. Rock, “the first is popping into the MFRC and making a financial donation. The second is participating in the breakfast, the morning of the game. The third is to come out to the game Saturday morning.”
Breakfast will be held at the Lakeland Inn from 7:15 to 9:15 am, on Saturday, December 15th. The cost is $100 and you will receive a $75 tax receipt. “There’s a chance to win some breakfast only prizes. We’re talking about signed hockey jerseys, hockey paraphernalia and an exclusive change to meet the hockey heroes,” explained LCol. Rock Following the breakfast head over to the Energy Centre where the hockey heroes will take on local heroes.
Heroes include Hayley Wickenheiser and Oilers alumni; Mark Fistric, Brian Benning, Doug Hicks, Chris Joseph, and Shawn Belle. The Hockey Heroes will be taking on local heroes; including, military members, first responders, sponsor heroes, and youth players.
Hayley Wickenheiser was recently appointed the Honourary Coronal for the 401 Tactical Fighter Squadron. As the commanding officer of the squadron, LCol. Rock says he worked with Wickenhauser to put on a hockey event. “We wanted to make the event really big and something the community can get behind.”
“It’s an opportunity to watch a really great hockey game. Also you’ll get an opportunity to watch Haley and lastly you’ll be able to give back to the community,” stated LCol. Rock.
Puck drop is 10:15 am at Imperial Oil Place. Admission is a non-perishable food bank item for the Cold Lake Food Bank. Please bring one item per person attending.
