Tales from the Timebox: February 6th, 2018

Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, welcome to the main event! The Atom Avalanche played the only game at the AGR on this past Saturday. The main event was against Saddle Lake and it was worth the price of admission. The Avalanche winning 7 to 2 in the end . The big goalie from Saddle Lake facing 59 shots keeping this one close. Brayden ‘Pinball’ Pinette bouncing around like a wizard with a Gordie Howe hat trick. He scored a goal and an assist and two trips to the sin bin. Same thing for Timmy ‘the Freight Train’ Cardinal who was on a roll down the track; scoring two goals, an assist and also one trip to the penalty box. ‘Good Time’ Charlie Lesyk shedding the big pads and playing out of the net for the first time this year scoring a goal and two assists.  ‘Stellar Ella’ Ballas with a goal and some aggressive forechecking . Evett ‘Snoopy’ Smereka buried a bone in the mesh, ‘Cyclone Cole’ Pierce with a few spins around the net turning on the jets for one. Kaysen ‘Dynamite ‘ DeMossiac and Braylee ‘Little Charlie’ Lesyk with assists. Defense woman Spencer ‘Goldie Locks’ Malachowski had few shots from the point that didn’t go in, but the way she back checks and bushes players to the out side I wouldn’t care if she ever scored. She doing a great job. And another one ‘Hurricane Kayl’ Warawa positioned herself by the corner of the net just missing on the one timer three times. Don’t give up girl, sooner or later it will come. Raif ‘Rug Rat’ Evans Anderson answering the call between the pipes in this one.
So guess who scored the first goal on Sunday when the Atoms hosted Plamondon? None other than ‘Hurricane Kayl’ Warawa. The Atoms winning this one as well 7 to 4. ‘Snoopy’ , ‘Pinball’ and the ‘Freight Train’ scoring two each. ‘Dynamite’ and ‘Cyclone Cole’ with two assists each. the coaching staff trying a new line up for this one . Charlotte ‘Web Mail’ Henderson up front with ‘Stellar’ and ‘Hurricane’, ‘Anna the Banana’ Henderson back on the blue line with the ‘ Rug Rat’ and ‘ Goldie Locks’ . Looks like it worked out fine!
Our Micro-Novice team played over in Frog Lake on Saturday morning winning this one quite easily. Hat tricks for ‘Major Tom’ Melnyk, Ryder ‘Rhino ‘ Malo and Jaxon ‘Magic’ Marcoux, two goals each for William ‘Billy Bob’ Ballas, and ‘Jesse James’ Penner. Add a couple of assists for them too.  Theo ‘Long Horn’ Loughran with a goal and an assist. And the littlest guy scoring his first two goals ever, and we know the way he plays it won’t be his last, four year old Lennox ‘ All Out’ St. Arnault . I hope his mom kept the puck!
The Novice Avalanche went all the way to the A final in the St. Paul tournament this past weekend, defeating the KC Dragons in the first game 9 to 3, then a huge win over Cold Lake. On Sunday, they played early against the host St. Paul winning this one 5 to 4 sending them to the A final against Dewberry/Marwayne losing a heart breaker 2 to 1.  Wish I could list them all, but every kid on this team contributed in the tournament with a few goals or assists and made their parents and grand parents very proud, getting all the way to the A final and playing good clean competitive hockey.
The Peewee # 4 team played in Mallaig on Saturday coming home with a one all tie. ‘Top Gunner’ Crawford the lone goal scorer for the Avalanche. Goalie ‘Kid Kade’ Fontaine was busy in this one and played awesome facing a bombardment of shots, On Sunday, the Peewee # 4 team loaded up the bus at 7am heading 5 hours north to Wabasca for a provincial round robin game. The outcome was not so great the team losing by 10 goals and eliminated from the provincials, but it was a great bus trip for camaraderie and team bonding.
The Peewee tier one team had a very good weekend playing a tough team in Meadow Lake on Saturday. ‘Mick Jager’ Fontaine with the only two goals, assisted by ‘King Kong Konnor’ Poitras.  Back home on Sunday, the team played terrific, holding their own for fifty minutes, a one all tie late into the third period against one of the top teams in the league, Bonnyville. They simply ran out of gas late in the third period losing this one 5 to 1 in the end. Goalie Vanden ‘Super Mario’ Moroziuk facing 40 shots in this one played outstanding standing on his head at times. ‘King Kong Konnor’ Poitras with the only goal, assisted by ‘Cash’ Paycheque’ Capjack and ‘ Mick Jager’ Fontaine.  Tonight the Peewee one team will travel Vegreville to play the first game of round two of their zone 7 provincial round robins. The second game will be held here next Monday night.
Bad news once again for the injury ridden Bantam Avalanche losing one of their top defenseman for the second time this year. Jace ‘the Stafford Streak’ who just returned from a broken wrist a week ago is off now with a broken elbow and will be out of action for a minimum of two weeks, if not more. It was a busy week for the short bench Bantams who played in Lac La Biche on Tuesday night winning that one, then traveled to the Border City, Lloydminster on Wednesday night losing that one by one goal. On Sunday, they traveled back to the Border City once more playing to a three all tie. ‘Lightning Liam’ Ludlage, ‘King Cole’ Bendixen and Dallas ‘Cowboy’ Bristow scoring the goals , Jaden ‘Jetstream’ Van Maarion in on the assists.
After last weeks Donnybrook up in Cold Lake the Midget Avalanche team had four players suspended for a couple of games each and were scheduled to play Saddle Lake in a provincial game on Wednesday night in Saddle Lake. Fortunately Saddle Lake wasn’t a very strong team and our guys were able to beat them with a small roster in one game by more than ten goals to move on to the next round.
On Saturday, they traveled to the Border City still short four players and came home with a four all tie. The Avalanche were leading 3 to 1 after the first period, but  started to power out in the second and third period, just barely hanging on to the tie with the help of goalie Colton ‘Colt 45’ Van Maarion. Two goals each for  Nick ‘Sparky’ Anderson and Brody ‘the Big O’ Odgaard. Wolke ‘Wolfman’ Cueva and Hayden ‘Hot Wheels’ Ludlage with the assists.
On Sunday. with almost a full line up, the Avalanche returned to the scene of the crime, Cold Lake losing this one 8 to 3. Not great, but not nearly as bad as the week before and far less penalties. The Avalanche facing a pretty tough goalie, they put 53 shots on their net. Between the pipes, our goalie Spencer ‘Fortress’ Hardcastle facing 50 himself. ‘Sparky’ the ‘Wolfman’ and team captain ‘Awesome Alex’ Hunter with the goals. Austin ‘Astro’ Axley with two helpers, rugged D Man ‘Warrior Warren’ Ference with one.
In girls action this past weekend Sydnee ‘Sid the Kid’ Crawford and Jadey ‘the Lady’ Capjack playing Bantams for the Vermilion Tigers defeated Fort Saskatchewan, in provincial play and will go on to the next round.
Meanwhile over in St Paul old team mates from the Storm met in Midget provincial action. On the St. Paul Canadiens side there was Halle ‘Comet ‘ Stybel, Fawn ‘Fonzy ‘ Ockerman, Ashley ‘Hacksaw’ Hunter, the Hladunewich sisters, all who have played with Heaven ‘the Brick House’ Colbourne on the Storm, who was playing goal for the Lakeland Jaguars. The Jaguars defeated the St. Paul Canadiens in the two game total point series in the third overtime period. ‘Brick house’ got pretty lucky when ‘Raging Paige’ Henderson from the Canadiens took a wicked slap shot that went off the crossbar. One minute later the Jaguars scored to win the series and go on to the next round.
And now for the K. A. Campbell quote of the week. “One road trip we were stuck on the runway for seven hours. The plane kept driving and driving until we arrived at the rink and then I realized we were on a bus.” – Glenn Healy
