I always skate 500 miles

Tales from the Timebox: December 13th, 2017

Lets go Oilers!!! Go Leafs Go!!! Who do you cheer for? What a NHL game Sunday night when the Leafs hosted the Oilers. Honestly, I must admit I cheer for the Leafs, but I don’t mind if the Oilers win because they need the two points more than the Leafs do. And my good buddy Mark ‘the Marksman’ Letestu always seems to come up with big games against the Leafs. Nothing doing on Sunday night though. I think the goal posts and a few horse shoes won that game for the Leafs. A few weeks ago when the Leafs played in Edmonton ‘the Marksman’ was the first star scoring a goal and two assists.

I never got to see him after the game, but we were invited to his house by his wife Brett the following Sunday. She planned a surprise 500 NHL game party for him. By the way, he just recorded his 200 NHL point in their win over Montreal Saturday night. And for you kids who didn’t know, the Canadiens were his favorite team growing up as a kid.  500 games and 200 points, not bad for the kid from Elk Point who was never drafted, stayed at home and played Jr. B in St. Paul, Jr. A in Bonnyville and still made it to the big league by hard work and practise. Kids, don’t give up on your dreams, practise, practise, practise!

Here’s a team that has some great practises. Got to hand it to the coaching staff of the Atoms. Head coach Jacques DeMoissac, his assistants Dennell Anderson,  Willy Lesyk and manager Melinda Henderson. They are doing a wonderful job of teaching this team how to skate and other game skills. They traveled to Millet to play in their tournament this past weekend, winning all three of their games including the A final. This is a huge confidence builder for this young team.

While most sane people were still in bed at 8am on Saturday, they played their first game winning over Maskwaus 12 to 1. Kaysen ‘Dynamite’ DeMoissac with a goal and four assists was the game MVP. ‘Hurricane Kayl’ Warawa with a goal and an assist was awarded the Heart and Hustle Award. Their second game later that same day they would win 7 to 1 over Stony Plain. Spencer ‘Goldie Locks’ Malchowski winning the MVP, Braylee ‘Little Willy’ Lesyk awarded the Heart and Hustle. In the gold medal game against the host Millet on Sunday they would win 7 to 1. ‘Cyclone Cole’ Pierce with a hat trick in this game winning the MVP, Anna the Banana’ Henderson with the Heart and Hustle. Not only did they win the A final, our guys did awesome at the skills competition too. ‘Cyclone Cole’ taking first place in the accuracy challenge. Raif ‘Rug Rat’ Evans Anderson winning first place in puck handling and was also the fastest skater as well. Charlotte ‘Web Mail’ Henderson second place in stick handling, Evett ‘Snoopy’ Smereka the second fastest skater at the event.

By playing smart hockey and passing the puck, nothing seems to keep the undefeated Bantam Avalanche down. When the team is all there and healthy they only have ten skaters in the line up, so this past Saturday missing two players was still not that big of a problem. With only three D Men and five forwards on Saturday night they still won the game over Cold Lake 5 to 4. Great team effort as shown by the game sheet. Five goals, and five different goal scorers. Charlie ‘Chuckles’ Rogal, Evan ‘Batman’ Ockerman, Odin ‘the Wall’ Smith. ‘King Cole’ Bendixen, and ‘Lightning Liam’ Ludlage all scoring. Goalie ‘Sexy Slader’ Hardcastle facing 32 shots doing a terrific job of keeping the rubber out.

The peewee # 4 team had a .500 weekend, losing on Saturday 3 to 0 in Irma, but coming up with a huge win on Sunday at home against Mallaig; winning that one 4 to 2. ‘Top Gunner’ Crawford with a goal and an assist, ‘Bazooka Joey’ Cardinal , Kaleb ‘Formula One’ Flamand, and ‘Bo Diddley’ Fontaine all scoring. Seth ‘Motorman’ Morton and Dean ‘the Machine’ Ockerman with assists. Dean the Machine’ and Gavin ‘Giver’ Kadutski were awarded the inspirational players of the games by the coaching staff.

In the tough tier # 1 league you don’t get a lot of time to think about what you’re going to do with the puck. Usually someone is on you like glue for-checking all the time. Scoring any goals is challenging in this league, but it seems the peewee # 1 team was getting a little more offence going this past weekend, losing 12 to 4 on Saturday in Cold Lake. Two goals and an assist for ‘King Kong’ Konnor Poitras, Cash ‘Paycheque’ Capjack with a goal and two assists, ‘Mick Jager’ Fontaine doing the same, one goal two assists. Close but no cigar on Sunday at home when the Avalanche hosted the Lloydminsiter Blazers. They didn’t totally douse the flames but at least slowed down the fire losing this one 7 to 6. ‘Mick Jager’ dancing through the flames with five goals, and an assist . ‘ Paycheque’ with a goal and three assists.

The novice Avalanche seemed to have a bit of trouble penetrating the two big Monarch players on the blue line Saturday morning losing to Mallaig 5 to 3. But the speedy ‘Wyatt Earp’ Fontaine did get through the wall firing two goals into the mesh. ‘Without a Trace’ Morgan helping him out with both goals, he has a couple of assists, Riley ‘the Coyote’ Bourne with a helper too. Kale ‘the Hawk’ Ockerman with his huge wingspan getting loose one time too, soaring in and swooping down to score one all alone. Not scoring in this one, but putting lots of pressure on the Monarchs, Miles ‘the Millionaire’ Koren and Jackson J.R. Rawlake were both doing a good job of fore checking and turning the puck over .Remington ‘Steel ‘ Reynolds was on the doorstep knocking once. He just missed the cage by inches to bury it. Defensemen Jonathon McAleese and Jaxon ‘ Smitty ‘ Smith cruising the Avalanche blue line doing a great job of holding the line. Some outstanding goaltending by ‘Notorious Nolan’ Ballas who was keeping the game close. Lots of fun for everyone at the micro novice game on Saturday morning against St. Paul. These guys are just like a barrel of monkeys tripping and crashing into each other. A hat trick for ‘Jesse James’ Penner, who also added two assists, Ryder ‘Rhino’ Malo with two goals and an assist. William ‘Billy Bob’ Ballas with two goals and an assist. Jaxon ‘Magic’ Marcoux with a goal and two assists. ‘Major Tom’ Melnyk with an assist. Four year old little Lennox St Arnault never stopped cruising the whole 60 minutes.

And now for the K. A. Campbell quote of the week. ‘ They were checking us so closely, I could tell what brand of deodorant they were using.’ Gary Dornhoefer
