Scott MacDonald Memorial will be an exciting day

This Saturday at Walsh Field is going to be one busy day! The Eighth Annual Scott MacDonald Memorial day will feature three huge match-ups for the Bonnyville Amateur Football Association (BAFA). In addition, the community will have several ways to help raise funds for the cause. The day honours former BAFA player Scott MacDonald, who passed away after a battle with cancer.

Funds to help local community

All funds raised during the weekend will be staying within the community to help those affected by cancer. This year some of the funds will go towards creating care packages. The packages will be distributed to local kids battling cancer. Funds will also go towards the cancer clinic in Bonnyville. Another portion will go towards the Scott MacDonald Memorial Scholarship.

Another big aspect of the day will be the head shaves. The Bandits will shave their heads during half-time at the Renegades game. The Voyageurs will follow suit during half-time of the Bandits game. This year, Cassie Christians, a female Bandits player will make some history during the head shave. Football mom Serena Critch will also be doing the head shave. The hair collected from all head shaves will be donated.

Hoping to match

Last year the Scott MacDonald Memorial Day raised around $12,000. The organizers of this year’s event are hoping to match that. The only hampering factor is that the uncertainty surrounding Walsh Field left a lot of the work to the last minute.

New field

Last year saw an attendance of about 2000 people. This year with the renovated Walsh Field, the experience is going to be up several notches. The new turf has proven to be quite the draw for a couple of games already. The community response has been great, and that should only add to the day.

Bonnyville Bandits vs Wainwiright Warhawks – 4:30 p.m.
Bonnyville Voyageurs vs Cold Lake Royals – 7:30 p.m.

BIG CASH ON THE LINE

Another big draw to the day is the $10,000 cash draw. Tickets have been sold for the past few weeks. A couple of tickets will still be available for sale on game day.

To top off the day, Walsh Field will have it’s official ribbon cutting shortly before the Voyageurs game. The ceremony is set for pre-game of the Voyageurs vs Royals game.

“There’ll be a lot of buzz… It’s going to be a big draw. Dignitaries from the M.D. (of Bonnyville), town, and everything will be there for the ribbon cutting. It’s going to be an exciting day. We have a good line up of games with the teams we are playing.” Dan Jubinville explains.
