MS Research Gala to display progress in fighting Multiple Sclerosis

The Lakeland Chapter of the MS Society will host their inaugural research gala event, on August 17th. The intimate event will bring in two keynote speakers to discuss advancements in discovering how Multiple Sclerosis (MS) develops, as well as, new stem cell transplant treatments that have proven to stop the disease. The event is open to the people living with MS, as well as the public at the Canalta Hotel in St. Paul.

Andrew Caprariello, Ph.D. will be speaking on discovery advancements on the initial stages of the disease. Caprariello has devoted the last 11 years to the study of MS. Caprariello is currently working on his Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with Dr. Peter Stys at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute of the University of Calgary.

Caprariello will be speaking to how preventing “Canada’s Disease” may soon be a reality. Speaking on the future of MS medicines and important clues about what causes MS lesions in the first place. According to his biography, “this work is important because it tests an alternative theory about what cause MS lesions, with exciting results and important implications for our understanding and treatment of MS.”

Also speaking at the event is Fiona Fifield, author of Fiona’s Fight and recipient of the Donna Thurber Courage Award. After receiving a terminal diagnosis, Fiona’s life was turned around she received a stem cell transplant and now lives symptom free. Fiona’s story is about combating and curing MS.
