Big test for two Lakelanders

Jacob Bartman and Brooke Skrypichayko are now back home after close to a week in B.C. Both were in Cowichan for the 2017 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships. The week long tournament is a best on best tournament from all over Canada.

The run for female midget bronze

Skrypichayko was a part of the female Team Alberta Midget squad. The team found themselves in a quarter final match nearing week’s end. They would win that game to advance to the semi-final for a chance to capture gold. Manitoba would win the game, sending Alberta to the bronze medal game.

“I was just happy to be there. It was my first year. Alberta hasn’t been in the semi’s in quite a few years…. We knew who we were up against in semi’s, and Manitoba ended up winning the tournament.”  Skrypichayko says.

Team Alberta would lose in the bronze game in triple overtime. British Columbia captured the bronze medal on home ice.

Midget boys go home early

“It was a fun tournament. All the boys came together, but we didn’t have the result we wanted.” Bartman says.

The Midget Team Alberta boys ended the round robin of the tournament with a 1-2-1 record. The record meant they would not advance on to the medal rounds, and were headed home earlier than expected.

Mantioba wins both sides

It was a weekend that ended all in Manitoba’s favour. Both the boys and girls sides took home gold medals in Cowichan.
