March is Nutrition Month!
Today is the first day of March and March is Nutrition Month!
Every year Dietitians of Canada chooses a new theme for Nutrition Month. The Nutrition Month 2017 theme is supporting Canadians to stop their struggles with food. The slogan for the theme is “Take the fight out of food! Spot the problem. Get the facts. Seek support.”
According to Dietitians of Canada, “eating should be joyful, not a source of everyday frustration and confusion.” They offer a three-step approach to end the food fight:
1. Spot the problem. Figure out what is causing your fight with food.
2. Get the facts. Look for a solution to the problem from credible sources.
3. Seek support. Create a support system (i.e. family, dietitian) to help with your action plan.
There are five areas this month’s theme will provide information and fact sheets for (clink on the link to access the fact sheets for more information):
1. Foods Fads. A dietitian’s tip is “Be careful if a product claims a long list of conditions it “cures.” Nothing is a cure-all for everything.”
2. Digestive Woes. A dietitian’s tip is “Self-diagnosing, without the care and support of a dietitian, can lead to unnecessary food and nutrient restriction.”
3. Picky Eating. A dietitian’s tip is “Keep mealtimes pleasant! Your child’s attitude towards certain foods can be related to the mood in which it was served.”
4. Eating and Stress. A dietitian’s tip is “Instead of turning to comfort food, fight stress by doing something you enjoy.”
5. Managing a Condition. A dietitian’s tip is “There is not a simple one-diet-fits-all approach. A dietitian can work with you to meet your individual goals.”
