KidSport Funds Run Dry

15 kids on waiting list for funding

KidSport Bonnyville has been forced into the unenviable position where financial resources have been exhausted due to the increased number of applications received in 2015 and 2016. The local not-for-profit organization funded 134 kids for $36,518.00 in 2015 and 100 kids for $28,500.00 in 2016, and 2017 applications have already started to pile up.

The nation-wide KidSport program provides financial assistance so kids from low income families can participate in a season a sport. Through a confidential application process, grants are provided that will fund up to $300.00 per child annually towards sport registration fees. Currently, there are over 15 applications waiting for funding.
KidSport Bonnyville has been has assisting low-income families register their kids in sports since 1995 and, with the support of the KidSport Alberta office, a local committee was reborn in January 2011. With the motto “so all kids can play” as motivation, the volunteer group has worked extremely hard for the past 6 years to get local kids off the sideline and into the game. As a result, KidSport Bonnyville was selected from the 37 chapters in the province as Chapter of the Year, in both 2012 and 2015, recognizing their outstanding efforts.
