St. Paul takes down Vermilion and Onion Lake over the weekend

The St. Paul Jr B Canadiens continue their unbeaten streak with two wins over the weekend. Head Coach of the Canadiens Joe Youngs says their success comes from working hard every.single.night.

Friday: Vermilion

“A lot of credit to Vermilion,” says Coach Young, “they work extremely hard and their goalie was just out of the world that night; it was crazy. He made some tremendous saves.” Tigers netminder, Levi Myshak stopped 55 of the 59 shots on goal Friday evening, whereas the Canadiens’ David Rupp only saw 23 shots.

Elias Chaulk opened up scoring for St. Paul, late in the first, with the assist from Zach Bendall and Arron Gagne. Vermilion responded a minute into the second from, Rylan Mauws and then took the go-ahead at 11:04 from Dalyn Borysiuk. Sharp-shooter, Ryley Wozniak saved the period by tying it up and then also getting the g0-ahead to leave 40 minutes a 3-2 game for the Canadiens.

The third was a crazy battle, says  Coach Young, “it was one of those games where they tied it up with 3 seconds left in the game.” It was Borysiuk with his second goal of the game, for Vermilion, that would force extra time. “The guys are down a little bit, but you have a good feeling, just from the way things have been going lately, that we’re going to be able to get the game winner,” Coach Young says he never doubted the squad’s ability to bring home the win.

It would take two minutes into the second overtime to make it happen, for the Canadiens, thanks to a beauty goal from Brayden Goulet, fed from Bendall. “We had to work for everything we had that night,” Coach Young says it’s always a great battle playing Vermilion.

Saturday: Onion Lake

The Border Chiefs opened up the scoring Saturday Night in Onion Lake, with a goal from Tobie Opikokew, 6:54 into the first. “We haven’t had any lopsided games, other than one in Veg, yet this year. We’ve had to work hard for every single win we’ve had,” proclaims Coach Joe Young of the Canadiens.

The second period flipped fast, a minute into play, Bailey Lonsberry answered Onion Lake thanks to Zach Bendall and Kona Jackson, then a couple minutes after Ryley Wozniak sent one to the back of the net thanks to Bendall and Roddy MacDougall. The Border Chiefs responded two minutes after with a goal from Justice Gardypie and eight minutes after that the Canadiens got the go-ahead from Arron Gagne, assist to Jareh Gray and Bendall.

In the third Bendall grown tired of picking apples and placed a goal in with seconds left on the clock thanks to Brayden Goulet, to close the game 4-2 for the Canadiens.

“The score wasn’t really indicative of the game,” Coach Young says he felt the Canadiens controlled the play for the most part in Saturday’s match. “We had a lot of offensive time in that game and played well defensively. Onion Lake is probably one of the bigger teams, that we’ve played against; there again, we’re built for team speed and those are the types of teams we like to play.”

The Canadiens welcome Onion Lake to the Clancy Richard Arena on Wednesday evening. WIN tickets on LCN!
