Strong Weekend for the Elk Point Elks
Elks secure a 4-point weekend
“We played very well,” Head Coach for the Elk Point Elks, Murray Cochrane says he was pleased with the senior men’s performances this past weekend. “On Friday we won 6-0 against Two Hills. That was probably the most complete game I’ve seen them play in the three years that I’ve been coaching.”
Friday
The Elks hosted the Longhorns at the AG Ross arena Friday night with CHEVY BOTTING opening up the scoring at the 7:55 mark of the first. SEAN JOLY and JORDYN WOZNIAK received some points for helping out on that one. MYLES WHITFORD added to the count less than a minute later with the assist going to MATTHEW BOULIANNE. BOULIANNE then closed the period with 3-0 lead for the Elks thanks to BOTTING and MARK BRODBIN for the assists.
“They played very, very well. We definitely played to our best,” Coach Cochrane says the club impressed the home crowd with a sole goal to WHITFORD ( JORDAN HOGAN on the assist), during the second period and then a pair of goals in the third. DEREK WEST with help from JASON KALYNCHUK and BOULIANNE with his second goal of the night from NICODEMUS and WHITFORD to close the game 6-0.
Saturday
The following evening the club packed up the bags and headed south to Kitscoty to face the Monarchs. Another favourable outcome for the Elks, 8-1. “It was a rough game,” reports Coach Cochrane. “There was a bunch of penalties, but the boys played through everything and came out with the win.”
The game started off with the Monarch’s goal at 2:34 in the first, from BRETT FERGUSON. It took less than 30 seconds for the Elks to answer back with a goal from DEREK WEST. Assists to CHEVY BOTTING and JASON KALYNCHUK. BOTTING turned it around a couple shifts later with a goal from WEST and SEAN JOLY. SCOTT WARD closed out the period with the help of MATTHEW BOULIANNE for a 3-1 lead for the Elks.
“The second period took an hour to play,” due to all the penalties says the coach. 116 minutes of penalties were dished out between the two clubs. Through all that, the Elks managed to put up goals from MYLES QUINNEY, DAVIN BUCK, and two from BOTTING to make a hat trick.
The third period was a little tamer with only 12 minutes in penalties and a sole goal from SCOTT WARD of the Elks to close the game 8-1. “These games were very, very important, because they are in our division,” with the four points the Elk Point Elks are tied with the Lashburn Flyers for second place in the SaskAlta Senior Hockey League. “Four out of the seven teams make the playoffs, we can’t afford to be giving points away, it was a very good effort by everyone,” states Coach Coachrane.
The Elks are 4-2-0 heading into the weekend where they are scheduled to travel to Vermilion to take on the Rock on Saturday.
