LSC Over 800 Days Incident & Injury Free

Employee retention and diversity the key to LSC

LSC Industrial has surpassed 800 days without an injury or incident, a feat not too common in the oilfield industry. Co-owner of the welding and fabrication company, Jarl Groothuysen, says he believes the key to a one of the best safety records in the industry is investing in employees. What makes LSC different from your average welding shop is the company not only expects, but it helps develop growth and depth in careers.

Jarl, who co-owns LSC with his brother Joe and longtime friend, Ryan Wizniuk explains each of the owners, along with employees of LSC hold many trades and tickets. “Some of us are tradesmen, some of us are multi-disciplined tradesmen, with three careers worth of experience in the field,” explains Jarl. “We decided to pool our resources to create a better fabrication company.” That translates into being able to withstand the ups and downs of the oil industry; as well as creating a jack-of-all-trades style shop that can really handle any project- start to finish.

“We keep a broad range of trades, from crane operators to carpenter to iron worker, millwright to boilmaker, and of course welders and pipefitters,” Jarl says the company encourages its employee to hold two or more trades. “LSC holds two patents and we do some manufacturing of the patents.” Diversity is the key to getting through the economic downturn.

“Our theory is, we don’t hire and fire per project. We hire and then if the employee is valuable, we’ll keep them on.” For example if the employee is a pipefitter, LSC will encourage them to get into carpentry or welding, “they’ll get into doing things out of their box and start learning how to become line locators, or safety inspectors. We’ll get them manufacturing our patents.” With retention come people that are very appreciative, explains Jarl.
