First Loss of the Season for the Lions

St. Paul falls 37-6 to Lloyd Comp

Head Coach for the St. Paul Lions says he’s proud of his squad’s fierce determination on the field Friday as they took on the Lloydminister Comprehensive High School Barons. Despite the outcome of the game, Coach Lumby says the team never backed down and fought hard to ultimately lose 37-6. It was the first loss in the regular season for the Lions who are in second place in Pool 2 of the Wheatland Football League.

“It was reasonably close for awhile,” explains the coach, “they got up 14-0, then we had a couple drives and had a couple field goals to make it 14-6. We had some momentum, right near the end of the half; but they had a quick drive right at the end of the half and kicked a field goal.” Lloyd Comp was up 17-6 at the half, “the second half didn’t go so well.”

“The other team just out played us,” Coach Lumby says there wasn’t a moment in the game where he felt the Lions didn’t roar. “I was proud of the team. Lloyd was a little better than us, in every aspect and it all adds up.” Lloyd Comp holds the top spot in Pool B of the Wheatland Football League with 166 Point For and 24 Points Against, second only to the top seeded, Lloydminster Holy Rosary Raiders, who hold the top spot in Pool A with 168 Points For and 31 Points Against.

The Lions are going to dip into Pool A this Thursday as they travel to Bonnyville to take on the Voyageurs. Coach Lumby says the team will be focusing on holding their ground on the field at this week’s practice, “we did get pushed around a little bit, on both ends, in the trenches. We’re going to look at making adjustments in those areas, but otherwise just working on getting better, in every area. We’ll be looking at zones, to see what we can improve on and specifically what went wrong.”

The game will be held at Walsh Field at 6:30 pm in Bonnyville.
