LCSD Nominates Natalie Maguire for Edwin Parr Award

Lakeland Catholic School District is pleased to announce Natalie Maguire as their nominee for the 2016 Edwin Parr Teacher Award. The Edwin Parr Award recognizes outstanding first year teachers in Alberta. Each year the ASBA (Alberta School Boards’ Association) honours six outstanding firstyear teachers with this award. School boards may nominate any first-year Kindergarten to Grade 12 teacher who has taught in an Alberta school jurisdiction.

Natalie is a teacher at École Notre Dame High School who truly deserves special recognition. She teaches Art, French Language Arts, Religion and Études Sociales. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is apparent in Natalie’s instructional methodology. She is student centered and front-loads students with a vast array of learning opportunities. She is very proactive in developing positive rapport with all students to establish trust, understand their strengths, learning needs and individual learning styles. Natalie is an exceptional first year teacher who seeks out opportunities to share her gifts and talents with students.

She not only provides the strongest high school art program for students, she started an Art Club that has been very well received. Students who have a passion for Art have embraced the Art Club and Natalie has used this extra time to provide opportunities to explore new visual medians. She also took her Art students to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts show in Vermillion. This year she coached the Junior boys’ volleyball team and her leadership was characterized by impeccable organization, a drive to develop the skills of all students, team collaboration and sportsmanship.

These same attributes are evident in her classroom. Her philosophy is that when we help one another, together everyone improves. Natalie not only has a truly genuine caring, nurturing disposition with her students, she treats every student that she encounters throughout her day with kindness and compassion. You will often see students in Natalie’s classroom after school and at lunch learning new art techniques or just chatting with her. Natalie treats every day as a new day, always having that positive attitude and seeking change not only in her life but in the lives of others as well.

Lakeland Catholic School District is proud of their 2016 Edwin Parr Nominee and would like to thank Natalie for all of her hard work and dedication to the District.
