Traffic Stop Leads to Drug & Weapons Charges: Bonnyville

On March 9th, 2016 at approximately 4:30 PM, a Constable of the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment was conducting patrols within the town of Bonnyville and observed a truck with an expired license plate.  A traffic stop was conducted with the vehicle and the driver, a 36 year old male resident of Ardmore, AB, was advised of the expiration and asked for identification.

When the driver could not produce identification he was detained and asked to exit his vehicle.  A search of the male, for officer safety purposes, was conducted and when the Constable pulled a lighter out of the male’s pocket a small bag of what is believed to be methamphetamine came out attached to it.  The male was arrested for possession of a controlled substance at this point.  Search of the vehicle revealed several packages of what is believed to methamphetamine, weapons, ammunition and drug paraphernalia.  All of the items were seized including the methamphetamine which has a street value of approximately $800.00.  Further checks on the male showed that he had a Firearms Prohibition which included ammunition and was under conditions which included not to possess weapons from a pending Assault with a Weapon charge.

The male was transported to the Bonnyville RCMP Detachment where he remains in custody pending bail for charges of Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Methamphetamine, Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, Possession of Ammunition when Prohibited to do so, Failing to Comply with Conditions X3, and Operation of an Unregistered Vehicle under the Traffic Safety Act.
