NLSD Evaluating Cold Lake French Immersion Program

Northern Light School Division (NLSD) will be evaluating the French Immersion Program offered at Cold Lake schools to determine if the program is still viable and wanted from the community. Nicole Garner, Communications Officer for NLSD, says the French Immersion has been available to Cold Lake students for some time.

“We started offering French Immersion to students in Cold Lake when we did the reconfiguration [of schools],” Garner explains the Division closed the school on the base and opened Cold Lake High School. At that time, NLSD started offering French Immersion at Northstar Elementary and Cold Lake Middle School because it was offered at the base prior to the school closure

“Since then, there’s been a few changes,” Garner explains that because of these changes it’s time for NLSD to meet with parents and teachers to re-examine the French Immersion program.”the school’s re-opened on the base and has French Immersion. The [enrollment] numbers have gone down, so we’re looking at what we can do to keep the program viable.”

We really want to hear from the parents to hear what their ideas are. -Nicole Garner Communications Officer Northern Lights School Division

French Immersion is offered by NLSD in Plamondon. Other Division schools did not have enough want/need for the program to be offered.
