LCSD Suspends International Air Travel

The Lakeland Catholic School District and Board of Trustees have passed a motion suspending all Board approved international travel for all staff, students, and trustees for the remainder of the 2015-2016 school year. This decision was  made  in  light  of  recent  world  events  and  a  recommendation  from  the  District’s insurance provider.

The Board strongly believes that the well-being and safety of students in our School District is paramount. Board Chairperson Mary Anne Penner said, “We did not make the decision to suspend international travel lightly. We made this decision because of recent world events. Our primary concern is the safety of our students and staff, and this decision was made in their best interests.”

The Board is committed to the reimbursement of students, or parents of students, who made deposits to attend international trips this year. The Board will reimburse students or parents for any deposit paid for which the student or parent cannot obtain a refund from the travel agency who arranged the trip.

The suspension of international travel will affect student trips planned for this school year as well as any professional development opportunities for staff and Board members. LCSD is working with the affected schools to help them access travel insurance refunds.

The suspension of International Travel may be reviewed if the Board is of the view that the situation  of  world  safety  is  sufficiently  changed  to  do  so,  and  must  be  reviewed  in September 2016 for the 2016-2017 school year.
