Elk Point Says “Good Buy to Hunger”
The Elk Point Community Lions, and Elk Point Co-op teamed up on December 1st, 2015 for their annual Good Buy to Hunger campaign. The Good Buy to Hunger food drive is held annually on the first Tuesday of December. This year, the one-day food drive sold 200 pre-made Good Buy to Hunger bags. The Community Lions use the donations to make up the Christmas Hampers, reports Lion Susan Frisby.
“The food is donated as part of the Santa’s Anonymous Program for the Christmas Hampers,” explains Frisby, “the Community Lions make sure every family gets a Christmas dinner, with a turkey.” Along with the turkey, the club distributes the approximately 1,500 pounds of food evenly depending on how many people per family. If there’s ten members, they’ll receive enough for ten people.
Frisby expects like many food banks, Christmas Hamper and Santa’s Anonymous programs, Elk Point’s will be in high demand, “we’re very grateful for everything we received today.”
To apply for the Christmas Hamper and/or Santa’s Anonymous, community members can call 780-724-3800. If you missed out on Tuesday’s event and would like to donate there are boxes at various stores and community locations throughout town; including the local schools and the Co-op.
The Community Lions would like to thank the Elk Point Co-op for hosting the event and making up over 200 Good Buy to Hunger Bags, to the Elk Point Fire Department for providing man-power to load and unload the groceries, B&R Eckel’s Transport for providing a truck and driver, Country 99 radio & Cody Malbeuf for help promoting the event and co-hosting through their annual Christmas Convoy food drive and a special thanks to Santa for making a special appearance.
