BONNYVILLE – The Town of Bonnyville is facing difficult decisions heading into its 2027 budget, with an estimated .66 million operating shortfall and community organizations seeking continued municipal support.

During budget discussions on October 27, Council identified community funding as one of the areas requiring consideration as it works toward balancing the budget.

The following day, five organizations appeared before Council during a special meeting to outline their activities, financial needs and requests for 2027.

The Bonnyville & District Chamber of Commerce requested $33,000 through a project-based sponsorship model, replacing its previous approach of seeking operating grant support. The funding would support several community and business initiatives, including the biennial Oil and Gas Show.

The Bonnyville Agricultural Society requested $20,000 to help support its operations and community events, including the rodeo and chuckwagon races.

The Bonnyville Health Foundation requested $27,500, consisting of $25,000 for its annual hospital gala and $2,500 for healthcare appreciation initiatives.

Community Futures Lakeland requested $7,500 for three entrepreneurship programs, while also discussing the Town’s existing business beautification initiative.

Hearts for Healthcare requested $5,000 in financial support, along with Council’s consideration of purchasing a $1,000 table at its gala, contributing a silent auction item and participating in Sparkle in the Park.

Organizations explain value of municipal support

Throughout the presentations, representatives highlighted how municipal contributions support local events, economic development, healthcare initiatives and volunteer-led organizations.

The Chamber told Council it has approximately 250 business members, with 85 percent located in town and 15 percent in the M.D. of Bonnyville.

Community Futures reported providing $1.44 million in business loans during its 2025–26 fiscal year, while supporting employment and entrepreneurship throughout the Lakeland.

The Agricultural Society outlined rising costs associated with maintaining its grounds and hosting major events, including significant repairs required following challenging weather conditions.

Healthcare organizations also emphasized the importance of municipal partnerships in supporting local medical services, fundraising and physician recruitment.

Funding decisions still ahead

The October 28 meeting was an opportunity for organizations to present their requests and answer questions from Council.

No final funding allocations were approved during those presentations.

Council will need to consider the requests alongside other municipal priorities as the 2027 budget process continues.

The challenge will be determining how much support the Town can provide while addressing its operating shortfall and maintaining municipal services.
