Meadow Lake – A piece of Meadow Lake’s history has been lost after a fire destroyed the beloved All Saints Orthodox Church, leaving its congregation mourning much more than a building.
The parish confirmed the devastating loss Thursday, sharing that thankfully, no one was hurt in the fire.
“It is with tremendous sorrow that we inform you all that our beloved All Saints parish burned in a fire last night,” the church shared.
“No one was hurt, for which we are immensely thankful. While our sure hope in Christ is not confined to any structure, we still mourn the loss of our beautiful hall, its many icons, and the years of care that were lovingly poured into the sacred space.”
For the people who worshipped there, All Saints was a place filled with generations of faith, memories and community. The icons and other pieces inside carried meaning that cannot simply be replaced by rebuilding walls.
For now, the congregation is taking time to process what has happened and figure out what comes next.
There will be no service this weekend.
“More info to come as it becomes available,” the parish said, ending its message with a prayer: “Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy.”
The loss is also a reminder of how much history can live inside the churches, halls and gathering places that dot communities across the Prairies. These buildings often tell the stories of the families who built them, worshipped in them and cared for them for decades.
What happens next for All Saints remains unknown, but the congregation’s message makes one thing clear: its faith and community are still very much intact.
As Meadow Lake begins to move forward, many will undoubtedly be asking whether this cherished piece of the community can one day be rebuilt.
And the fire leaves a broader question worth asking: What more can be done to preserve and protect the historic buildings that help tell the stories of our communities before they are lost?
