Saddle Lake – Three people are facing drug and firearms charges after a proactive RCMP traffic stop in Saddle Lake led to the seizure of three firearms, ammunition and more than 100 grams of suspected cocaine.

“This investigation reflects the focused, proactive work Saddle Lake RCMP members carry out in the community,” said Cpl. Rowena Shea of the Saddle Lake RCMP Detachment. “Our members are committed to working with community leadership and residents to address local priorities and reduce the harm caused by illegal drugs and unlawfully possessed firearms.”

The investigation began Sept. 4 when Saddle Lake RCMP members conducting proactive patrols spotted a vehicle displaying a licence plate that did not match the vehicle.

Officers initiated a traffic stop and, during the investigation, searched the vehicle.

RCMP say officers seized:

• Two .22-calibre firearms;
• Pump-action Winchester shotgun;
• Ammunition;
• 106 grams of suspected cocaine;
• 4 grams of suspected methamphetamine;
• Drug trafficking paraphernalia; and

Multiple IDs not belonging to the vehicle’s occupants.

As a result of the investigation, Cheyenne Large, 36, Corey Cardinal, 38, and Tyler Cardinal, 34, all residents of Saddle Lake First Nation, have been charged with:

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking;
• Unauthorized possession of a firearm;
• Possession of firearm in motor vehicle;
• Illegal possession of government documents; and
• Driving uninsured motor vehicle on highway.

Shea said information provided by residents also plays a role in helping police identify concerns and determine where enforcement efforts should be focused.

The charges have not been proven in court.
