More than 1,100 traffic tickets were issued across Alberta during the Heritage Day long weekend as RCMP stepped up enforcement efforts, with 90 impaired drivers removed from the province’s roads.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. “We all have a role to play in keeping Alberta’s roads safe. Choices such as driving sober, staying focused behind the wheel, adjusting your driving to road and weather conditions, and buckling up can save lives.”

From July 31 to Aug. 3, Alberta RCMP conducted enhanced traffic enforcement throughout the province, issuing a total of 1,107 traffic-related tickets.

Speeding accounted for nearly half of all tickets, with officers issuing 513 speeding violations. RCMP also handed out 27 distracted driving tickets and 20 seatbelt infractions during the enforcement campaign.

Police also removed 90 impaired drivers from Alberta roadways. Immediate Roadside Sanctions (IRS) issued during the long weekend included:

• 13 IRS 24-hour suspensions.
• 14 IRS WARN sanctions.
• 59 IRS FAIL sanctions.
• Four IRS ZERO sanctions involving novice or commercial drivers.

Despite the enforcement efforts, RCMP responded to 28 injury collisions and five fatal collisions during the four-day period.

Alberta RCMP continue to remind motorists that safe driving decisions—including obeying speed limits, avoiding distractions, driving sober and wearing a seatbelt—play a critical role in preventing serious collisions.
