Colonel Laura Gagné has been appointed Vice Wing Commander of 4 Wing Cold Lake, taking on a newly created leadership position as the base prepares for major growth and modernization tied to Canada’s future F-35 fleet.

A ceremony recognizing Gagné’s appointment was held at 4 Wing on Wednesday, July 22, with military leaders and regional representatives in attendance.

The addition of a Vice Wing Commander reflects the increasing responsibilities and strategic importance of 4 Wing, which is entering one of the most significant periods of transformation in its history.

New position created during major transformation

As Vice Wing Commander, Gagné will support Wing Commander Colonel Tim Woods and help oversee the operations, personnel and preparations underway at one of Canada’s premier operational fighter bases.

The role is being established as 4 Wing prepares for the transition to the F-35, expanded infrastructure and increased operational demands.

Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul MLA Scott Cyr, who also serves as Alberta’s Military Liaison, said the additional leadership capacity will help guide the base through the changes ahead.

“The creation of the Vice Wing Commander position reflects the unprecedented transformation taking place at 4 Wing Cold Lake,” Cyr said.

He described the work underway at the base as one of its most significant modernization efforts since the Second World War.

Supporting the next generation of air power

Gagné’s appointment comes as the Canadian Armed Forces prepares Cold Lake to play a central role in the country’s next generation of fighter operations.

Along with the arrival of the F-35, the region is expected to see continued investments in defence infrastructure, workforce development, training and partnerships with surrounding communities.

Cyr said Gagné’s operational experience and leadership will be valuable as 4 Wing takes on greater responsibilities.

“As 4 Wing takes on greater responsibilities and strategic importance, this additional leadership capacity will help ensure the Wing remains ready to meet Canada’s evolving defence commitments for decades to come,” he said.

Strengthening military and community partnerships

The appointment also comes as military, municipal, Indigenous, educational and industry partners work to strengthen Cold Lake’s role within Canada’s aerospace and defence sector.

Cyr said he looks forward to working with Gagné to continue building those relationships and supporting the military members and families stationed in the region.

The ceremony was also attended by Major-General Chris McKenna, Brigadier-General Mark “Buck” Hickey, Colonel Tim Woods and other Canadian Armed Forces leaders.

Cyr congratulated Gagné on the appointment and thanked her for her continued service to Canada.

“Colonel Gagné’s experience, leadership and operational expertise will be invaluable as the Wing continues to build on its strong reputation for excellence and prepares for the next generation of air power,” he said.
