In Loving Memory: Derek Michael Hramalak – Memento Funeral Chapel
Derek Michael Hramalak
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Derek Micheal Hramalak announces his peaceful passing at home with family by his side on Saturday July 11, 2026 after a courageous two year battle with cancer.
Derek was a farmer at heart and farmed his land for many years but always had at least one other job going. He was a real estate agent early in his adult life first working for L&R Realty and later becoming the owner of the firm. After that he worked as an EMT in Bonnyville and Cold Lake for 15 years. Once he stopped actively farming he was employed by AFSC as a crop insurance adjuster, a job that took him all over Alberta. He had a connection to the land that endured until his passing. He planted a garden this spring that will produce vegetables until the coming fall and many will remember the dahlias that grew on his land for years.
Derek was faced with multiple health issues over his life including 2 kidney transplants. In spite of these challenges he lived a vibrant and adventurous life. He was a very social person who loved to travel, to snow ski and have fun. He was a good friend to many and had a circle of friends from all the way back to childhood who were regular visitors until the end of his life. He loved to tell stories and he had a lot of them to tell.
He was a fiercely independent man who enjoyed people but was also comfortable in his own company. To the chagrin of his friends who wanted to do more to help, he would “do it himself”. If he ever asked for a favour, you knew he needed it bad.
Derek will be remembered by his sister Trudy Rupp who was a loving and faithful caregiver to him, especially during the last 2 years. He also is survived by his brother, Darren (Adrienne), his nephew Darcy (Elaine) Skarsen, and his niece Amy (Chris) Murphy. Amy and Chris recently took over the yard work and other household duties which Derek appreciated very much.
Derek has gone to join his beloved parents, Michael and Lorraine Hramalak who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his brother in law, Jim Rupp.
In accordance with Derek’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service is planned.
Respectfully submitted by the family.
