May 12, 1951 ~ July 9, 2026 (age 75)

With heavy hearts the family of Gary Glen Boyko of Elk Point, Alberta, are saddened to announce his passing on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at the age of 75 years.

Gary grew up on a farm along the North Saskatchewan River, southwest of Elk Point, where he completed his schooling, then worked constructing sheet metal buildings.  He also worked at Silverwoods Dairy in Edmonton for a couple of years.

He married his high school sweetheart Julie Hoard on July 10, 1975 in St. Paul.  They lived on the family farm for a year, farming the land and raising a few animals.  In the fall of 1976 they moved to Bonnyville, where Gary began a 40-year career installing flooring.

Gary loved music, and played in a few local country bands, which included: The Impalas, GRH Country, Country Top, Willow Creek Band, and County Express.  He was a skilled guitar picker, and also played a pretty mean fiddle.

Being an avid bowler, Gary attended many tournaments, and brought home a few medals and trophies.  He also enjoyed playing slow pitch in the beer league.

Camping filled the summers.  The fifth wheel had everything in it: extra plugs, cords, chairs and jackets.  He always said he wanted to be prepared in case someone needed something.

Later in life, a good friend got him hooked on karaoke.  Gary rarely missed a Friday at the Black Gold or the Bonnyville Hotel.  After moving to Lindberg in 2014, Gary started working at the Whitney Lake Lift Station for two days a week.  He took great pride in that job, and when he retired this spring for health reasons he really missed it.

Left to treasure all the precious memories are his loving wife of 51 years, Julie; son, Donovan (Niki) Boyko; daughter, Rebecca (Nelson) Ask; grandchildren: Charlotte Ask, Cohen Boyko, Alison Boyko, Casey Ask; siblings: Henry (Pat) Boyko, Judy (Bob) Wasylishen, Dalmer (Margie) Boyko; sister-in-law, Bonnie Thomas; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and numerous friends.

Gary was predeceased by his parents, William & Mildred Boyko; niece, Olga Smith; nephew, Kevin Boyko.

Cremation has taken place.  Celebration of Life, Friday, July 24, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Elk Point Seniors Centre, Elk Point, Alberta with Pastor Kelly Sibley officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made  to Haying in the 30’s, Box 35, Mallaig, Alberta T0A 2K0.
