A regional Handi-Van service aimed at improving transportation options for seniors and residents with mobility challenges is moving closer to becoming a reality in Elk Point.

Council received an update during its June 8 meeting following recent discussions between the Town of Elk Point and the County of St. Paul regarding the future operation of the service.

The proposed program would provide transportation for residents who need assistance travelling to appointments, services, and programs, both within the region and, potentially, to neighbouring communities.

Council heard that the Town of Elk Point is expected to act as the managing municipality for the service, with operational policies currently being developed.

Volunteer recruitment is also underway as organizers work to establish a pool of drivers to support the program.

The service has been discussed for several months as both municipalities explore ways to improve transportation accessibility for seniors, residents without access to vehicles and those facing mobility challenges.

Council members noted strong interest in the concept and that transportation remains a significant barrier for some residents seeking access to healthcare, shopping, social activities, and other services.

A formal policy and operating framework is expected to come before council for approval once details are finalized.

The program would build on broader regional discussions surrounding aging in place, senior supports and community accessibility.
