Chief Greg Desjarlais is speaking publicly for the first time since Frog Lake First Nations Council announced an independent investigation into governance-related matters and placed him on paid administrative leave.
In a statement dated June 5, Chief Desjarlais said he remains committed to cooperating with any lawful review process and urged community members and the public to allow investigations to proceed before drawing conclusions.
The statement comes days after Frog Lake First Nations Council announced it had initiated an independent investigation and temporarily removed Desjarlais from his duties while the review is conducted.
“For over a decade, Chief Greg Desjarlais has dedicated his life to serving the people of Frog Lake First Nation,” the statement reads, highlighting his work related to reconciliation, Treaty rights and community well-being.
The statement emphasizes that allegations currently under review should not be treated as established facts.
“When addressing the recent allegations against Chief Desjarlais, it is important to remember that allegations are not facts,” the statement says. “Investigative and legal processes must be allowed to proceed and make findings in a manner that respects both the rights of individuals and the governance laws of the Nation.”
According to the statement, Desjarlais intends to fully cooperate with the investigation and looks forward to responding to the concerns that have been raised.
The statement also asks community members, media and the public to approach the situation with fairness and respect while the process unfolds.
“In the meantime, Chief Desjarlais asks his fellow community members, members of the media, and the general public to approach this situation with the fairness, consideration, and respect befitting someone who has spent a lifetime serving his people and advancing reconciliation.”
The statement concludes by thanking Frog Lake First Nation members for their support and expressing Desjarlais’ intention to continue serving the Nation.
“Chief Desjarlais thanks the members of the Frog Lake First Nation for your ongoing trust and support. He pledges to continue his ongoing service, leadership, and advocacy for the community and looks forward to working together to build a strong, united future for our people.”
Council has previously stated that the administrative leave is precautionary in nature and does not represent a finding of wrongdoing. The Nation has indicated further updates will be provided once the independent investigation is completed.
