A man whose influence helped shape generations of students, community organizations and local government leaders across the Lakeland is being remembered for a lifetime of service.

On May 28, Lakeland Credit Union welcomed Raymond “Ray” Coates into its Wall of Distinction during a ceremony at the Cold Lake branch, recognizing a legacy that spans education, municipal leadership, volunteerism and community building.

The Wall of Distinction honours individuals whose contributions have left a lasting mark on the Lakeland region. For many who gathered for the ceremony, Coates was the embodiment of that spirit.

“Raymond’s lifelong dedication to education, leadership, and community service has left a lasting impact across the Lakeland region, and his legacy continues to inspire generations,” Lakeland Credit Union said following the event.

A life dedicated to helping others

For more than three decades, Coates worked in education as a teacher and vice-principal, helping guide and mentor countless young people throughout the region.

Those who knew him spoke not only about his professional accomplishments, but about the way he treated people — with patience, humility and a genuine desire to help others succeed.

“The impact of a great educator extends far beyond the classroom,” Bonnyville-Cold Lake-St. Paul MLA Scott Cyr said. “The influence Ray had on the lives of young people throughout the region continues to be reflected in the many former students, colleagues, and community members who remember him with respect and gratitude.”

His commitment to service extended well beyond the school system.

Coates served as Mayor of the former Town of Grand Centre (now Cold Lake), helping guide the community during a period of growth before the amalgamation that created the City of Cold Lake. He also dedicated countless hours to organizations that continue to play important roles in the region today.

His volunteer and leadership contributions included service with Lakeland Credit Union, Credit Union Central of Alberta and the Portage College Board, among many others.

A community builder remembered

One of the most powerful moments of the ceremony came through the stories shared by family, friends and community members.

While the details varied, the message was remarkably consistent: Ray Coates believed in his community and worked tirelessly to make it better.

Whether through education, municipal government, volunteer organizations or local institutions, his efforts helped strengthen opportunities for families and communities throughout northeastern Alberta.

“The respect and admiration expressed throughout the event spoke volumes about the legacy he leaves behind,” Cyr said.

That legacy is now permanently recognized alongside previous Wall of Distinction inductees Victor Ringuette, Joe Hamel, Ernie Isley and Eva Urlacher — individuals whose contributions helped shape the Lakeland region.

More than a name on a wall

Lakeland Credit Union’s Wall of Distinction is not simply a recognition of titles held or positions served. It is intended to honour people whose lives made a difference.

For many in attendance, that is exactly why Coates was such a fitting choice.

His impact can still be seen today in former students, community organizations, local institutions and the people he mentored throughout his life.

“Seeing Ray’s name added to the Wall of Distinction serves as a permanent reminder of the difference one person can make through a lifetime of service,” Cyr said.

As family members, friends and community leaders gathered to celebrate his induction, the event became more than a recognition ceremony. It became a reflection on the kind of leadership that has helped build the Lakeland over generations — leadership rooted in service, community and helping others succeed.

Thanks to the Wall of Distinction, Ray Coates’ story will continue to inspire future generations long after the ceremony itself has passed.
