Family and Community Support Services continues reaching a large number of residents across the St. Paul region, with council highlighting both strong youth participation numbers and the growing demand for local support services during its May 25 meeting.
Councillors praised FCSS staff for the department’s reporting format, saying it gives council a better understanding of how programs and services are being used throughout the community.
One area council specifically pointed to was tax return assistance.
Councillors noted FCSS staff completed a significant number of tax returns for residents this past season — a service that can make an important difference for seniors, low-income individuals and residents needing additional support during tax season.
Youth programming was another major focus of the discussion.
Council heard FCSS delivered five separate youth programs involving 82 participants, numbers councillors described as encouraging and a positive sign local youth are engaging with the programs being offered.
The discussion also touched on the role FCSS and municipal staff often play when medical situations or emergencies happen at public facilities.
Council acknowledged staff are regularly placed in situations where they may need to assist members of the public until additional help arrives, highlighting the importance of staff training and preparedness.
The conversation reflected the wide range of services FCSS continues providing throughout the community, from preventative social supports and youth engagement to frontline assistance for residents.
Council members thanked FCSS staff and volunteers for their continued work across the region.
