Elk Point council reviewed first-quarter financial reports during its May 25 meeting and set a tax recovery auction date for properties with outstanding taxes.
Council reviewed March 2026 operating revenue and expense reports, tax balances and municipal financial statements as part of its regular financial update.
Administration reported that the Town remains generally on budget heading into the second quarter, though councillors discussed ongoing pressures related to infrastructure, operational costs, and tax collection.
Tax arrears remain significant
Council heard that tax arrears currently sit at approximately $780,000.
Administration noted that some of the outstanding balances are tied to long-term situations already under repayment or legal processes, while others continue to progress through standard collection procedures.
Council also approved Oct. 6, 2026, as the public auction date for tax recovery properties.
Administration explained that the process is required under the Municipal Government Act when taxes remain unpaid for extended periods.
Council heard that approximately 8 properties are currently expected to enter the tax recovery process unless outstanding balances are resolved beforehand.
Residents still have the opportunity to pay arrears and avoid their properties from proceeding to auction.
Debenture nearing completion
Council also discussed the Town’s overall debt position, noting one municipal debenture is nearing full repayment.
Administration said internal budget adjustments continue throughout the year as projects and operational priorities evolve.
