Rural healthcare recruitment and retention remained a major focus for Elk Point council during its May 25 meeting, as councillors approved participation in a regional healthcare summit and officially proclaimed Alberta Rural Health Week.
Council proclaimed May 25–29, 2026, as Alberta Rural Health Week, recognizing the importance of healthcare workers and rural medical services across the region.
The proclamation came alongside discussion about the community’s continued efforts to strengthen healthcare attraction and retention initiatives locally and regionally.
Mayor to attend regional healthcare summit
Council also approved Mayor Wanda Cochrane’s attendance at a regional Rural Health Professions Action Plan (RHPAP) summit scheduled for June 2 in Smoky Lake.
The summit is expected to bring together municipalities and healthcare stakeholders from across northeastern Alberta to discuss physician recruitment, healthcare staffing challenges, and opportunities for regional collaboration.
Administration explained the goal is to help establish a regional attraction and retention committee focused on long-term healthcare sustainability in rural communities.
Council noted that rural municipalities continue to face challenges in recruiting healthcare professionals, particularly in smaller communities competing with larger urban centres.
The discussions also tied into broader regional efforts already underway surrounding housing, transportation and community supports — all factors municipalities increasingly see as connected to healthcare recruitment and retention.
