Greg Ward, a Grade 11 student at Vilna School, was among nine students from across Alberta to receive the 2026 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Student Award at a ceremony held May 11 at Government House in Edmonton.
The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Student Award recognizes students from across Alberta who have shown tremendous growth in developing skills to better themselves through determination and initiative, leading to their improvement and success both academically and personally. The award celebrates students’ attitudes, actions and characteristics in pursuit of their educational path, and their perseverance in achieving school success while modelling leadership that inspires their peers.
Greg was nominated for the award for exemplifying leadership, resilience and genuine humility. He has shown remarkable perseverance, taking on additional responsibilities at home while maintaining a positive attitude, strong attendance and academic success. In Vilna’s small-school setting, Greg demonstrates exceptional self-motivation, critical thinking and independence. He is actively involved in robotics and STEM programs, serving as a mentor to younger students at divisional events. Known for his kindness and inclusivity, Greg leads through service, supporting peers, staff and the wider school community.

The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Student Award is a collaboration between the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) and the Lieutenant Governor’s office, and sponsored by the Honourable Salma Lakhani and Dr. Zaheer Lakhani Keyera. Each award recipient was presented with a certificate and congratulatory letter, a medal symbolizing recognition of their exemplary accomplishments, and a $500 bursary.
