A violent home invasion in Bonnyville has resulted in charges on both sides after an altercation escalated into weapons and gunfire.

Forced entry and assault inside the home

Bonnyville RCMP responded to a call around 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 12, 2026, involving an assault with a weapon tied to an earlier dispute.

Police say several males forced their way into a residence, where the homeowner was assaulted with a weapon by one of the suspects.

Situation escalates outside the residence

During the incident, the homeowner reportedly obtained a weapon and seriously injured one of the suspects. The suspects then took that weapon, left the home and got into a vehicle.

RCMP say the homeowner followed them outside and discharged a firearm at the vehicle, causing damage but no reported injuries from the gunfire.

Charges laid against both men

Stephen Ray Van Hecke, 54, of Bonnyville, is charged with:

  • Assault causing bodily harm
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

He has been released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in Bonnyville court on May 19, 2026.

The homeowner, Marc Hamilton Heney, 52, of Bonnyville, is facing multiple charges, including uttering threats and seven firearm-related offences.

He has also been released on conditions and is set to appear in court on May 26, 2026.

Injuries and ongoing investigation

Both men were treated at separate hospitals and later released.

Bonnyville RCMP say the investigation remains ongoing.
