Elk Point council has approved the Elk Point Fire Department’s interim operating budget after reviewing updated financial information, including pre-audit figures and the town’s overall improved financial position.
The budget was passed unanimously at the April 13 meeting.
During discussion, council requested a closer look at the department’s pre-audit actuals before making a final decision.
Administration clarified that the numbers presented were based on pre-audit financials and are not expected to change significantly once the audit is complete.
“It is a pre-audit document,” council heard, noting that only minor adjustments, if any, would be expected following final review.
Decision follows earlier delay
The approval comes after council previously held off on passing the budget to better understand differences between projected and actual revenues.
Those concerns were largely tied to how funding flows through the system, particularly from sources such as Alberta Transportation and the County of St. Paul.
With additional clarity now provided, council moved forward with approval without further debate.
Stronger financial position supports decision
Council also reviewed broader municipal financials during the meeting, which showed a stronger-than-expected position heading into the 2025 audit.
Higher revenues — driven in part by increased interest income — combined with lower-than-expected expenses have helped reduce the town’s projected deficit.
That improved financial outlook provided additional confidence as council moved forward with approving the fire department’s interim budget.
Regional alignment on fire services
The decision brings Elk Point in line with the County of St. Paul, which had already approved the same interim budget.
The Elk Point Fire Department operates as a shared regional service, with both municipalities contributing funding and relying on the same equipment and personnel.
Council’s approval ensures continued operations while final audited numbers are completed.
