Lloydminster RCMP are sounding the alarm after responding to five suspected overdoses in just seven hours on April 13 — a sharp spike that has police warning the public about potentially dangerous drugs circulating in the community.

Officers say at least four doses of Narcan were administered, and in one case, RCMP members personally transported an individual to hospital due to delays in ambulance response.

Despite the severity of the incidents, no fatalities have been reported. All five overdoses were unrelated.

Drugs May Be More Dangerous Than Expected

While testing is still underway, investigators believe the substances involved may have been laced or contained higher levels of opioids than users expected.

Police have not yet determined where the drugs were obtained.

Recognizing the Signs of an Overdose

RCMP are reminding residents to watch for key signs of a fentanyl or opioid overdose, including:

• Slow, irregular or shallow breathing
• Pinpoint pupils
• Muscle stiffness
• Seizures
• Unconsciousness

Safety Reminders for Drug Users

Police are urging caution and sharing harm-reduction advice:

• Do not use drugs alone
• Have someone check in or stay on the phone while using
• Know the signs of overdose and call 911 immediately
• Carry a naloxone kit and know how to use it
• Consider using the Digital Overdose Response System app
