Students in Kehewin will continue to face transportation challenges as poor road conditions force multiple school bus routes to shut down.

A letter sent to parents and guardians on March 20 from Kinokamâsihk Kiskinohamâtokamik confirms that buses 3, 4 and 7 will not be running due to unsafe road conditions across the Nation.

Roads described as hazardous

School officials say the condition of local roads has become increasingly dangerous, citing deep potholes, uneven surfaces and a lack of proper maintenance equipment.

During spring thaw and wet weather, the situation worsens.

“These conditions not only delay transportation but also increase the risk of accidents and bus damage,” the letter states.

The concerns go beyond inconvenience. Officials say the safety of students, drivers and buses is now directly at risk.

Impact on families and students

Reliable transportation is critical for students to attend school consistently. The disruption is already creating stress for families and placing added pressure on bus drivers and contractors.

Despite the transportation issues, schools will remain open.

Parents are being reminded that any students who are dropped off must be picked up at the end of the day in the designated student drop-off area.

Repairs underway but no timeline

Leadership says efforts are underway to address the issue, with repairs and ongoing maintenance being prioritized. However, there is no confirmed timeline for when affected bus routes will resume.

Until then, families are encouraged to check the KCEC Facebook page for daily updates.

A community-wide concern

The situation highlights ongoing infrastructure challenges in the region, particularly during seasonal transitions when road conditions can quickly deteriorate.

For now, families are left to adjust day-by-day as crews work toward safer travel conditions.
