The Municipal District of Bonnyville has approved becoming a Hosting Sponsor for the 2026 Cold Lake Air Show, committing ,500 plus GST toward the regional event.
Council approved the funding during its March 10 meeting, with the sponsorship coming from the municipality’s 2026 council grants and individual and non-government organizations council giving budget.
The Cold Lake Air Show is scheduled for July 18 and 19, 2026.
Administration initially brought forward a proposal recommending the MD purchase a $50,000 sponsorship package, similar to previous support provided to the event. However, councillors discussed whether a lower sponsorship level could still provide adequate access for municipal representatives and visiting dignitaries.
During discussion, councillors examined the various sponsorship tiers and what each would include, particularly access to the VIP chalet and the Wing Commander’s dinner.
One councillor said they preferred a lower-cost option if it still allowed the municipality to host guests attending the show.
“I would prefer the hosting package for 37.5,” the councillor said, noting council had originally budgeted up to $50,000 if required.
Administration later confirmed the hosting package would still provide access to 15 spaces in the VIP tent on Saturday, which addressed council’s concerns about accommodating visiting officials and guests.
Council then passed the motion to approve the $37,500 hosting sponsorship.
