Firefighters and peace officers across Vermilion River County have been busy over the past several weeks taking part in extensive training exercises designed to strengthen emergency response across the region.

Firefighters build foundational skills

Dewberry Fire & Rescue Captain Tyler Haney has been leading the NFPA 1001 Level 1 course, the foundational training program for professional firefighters. The course began in January and is expected to continue through the spring.

Recently, firefighters participating in the course took part in a practical demonstration on air flow in structure fires, a key component of modern firefighting tactics.

Additional specialized training underway

Other departments have also been sharpening their skills through a variety of specialized programs.

Peace Officers recently completed re-certification training at the Alberta Law Enforcement Training Centre, focusing on important topics such as lidar and radar operation as well as wildlife control.

A hazardous materials training course was also held in Islay, bringing together participants from industry and several emergency services including Lloydminster Fire Rescue, Vermilion Fire & Rescue Society, Blackfoot Fire and Rescue, and the Kitscoty Fire Department.

Local station training has also continued, with firefighters participating in drills hosted by the Paradise Valley Fire Department. These sessions focused on urban firefighting operations, including hydrant use and interior attack strategies.

Meanwhile, firefighters in Dewberry completed an all-terrain vehicle driver course, learning proper operation of off-road vehicles commonly used during wildland firefighting and remote rescue situations.

Ice rescue training in Blackfoot

Training continues this weekend with a water and ice rescue course taking place in the Hamlet of Blackfoot.

From March 7 to March 8, firefighters are training under the instruction of Arctic Response Canada Ltd. at the storm pond located near 53 Avenue and 57 Street across from the Vertex Resource Group building.

Residents may notice open ice and rescue drills throughout the weekend, particularly on Sunday, as crews practice techniques used during cold-water emergencies.

Multiple departments involved

Departments participating in the regional training efforts include:

  • Blackfoot Fire and Rescue
  • Dewberry Fire & Rescue
  • Kitscoty Fire Department
  • Paradise Valley Fire Department
  • Vermilion Fire & Rescue Society
  • Clandonald Fire
  • Islay Fire
  • Marwayne Fire
  • County of Vermilion River Protective Services

Officials say the training ensures firefighters and emergency personnel remain prepared for a wide range of situations.
