A devastating day on northeastern Alberta roads has left families grieving.
Saddle Lake Cree Nation confirmed Monday that two separate motor vehicle collisions claimed the lives of two community members. Others were injured and are receiving medical care.
In a statement dated March 2, Chief Dale Steinhauer called it a “deeply painful day” for the Nation, noting the crashes may be linked to extremely difficult winter driving conditions.
“Our prayers continue for healing for those injured and strength for their families,” the statement read.
The Nation also confirmed that one council member is directly impacted by the loss of a daughter. As a result, this week’s Regular Council Meeting and Band Member Interviews have been postponed to a later date out of respect for the families and the time of mourning.
Whitefish Lake First Nation #128 shared a message of solidarity, offering sincere condolences and prayers to Saddle Lake Cree Nation during the tragedy.
Chief Steinhauer thanked those who have reached out in support and asked people to continue keeping the affected families in their thoughts.
Multiple Serious Collisions Near St. Paul
St. Paul RCMP also responded to serious motor vehicle collisions in the region as road conditions worsened.
Highway 652 at Range Road 113 was temporarily closed in both directions while emergency crews worked on scene. Police have since confirmed the highway has reopened and thanked the public for their cooperation. Drivers are reminded to use caution, as road conditions remain treacherous.
RCMP were also on scene of a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 29 between Range Roads 105 and 110. That highway was closed in both directions while emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene. It has since reopened.
Police say road conditions in St. Paul and surrounding areas have been deteriorating. The public is being asked to avoid unnecessary travel and to drive according to conditions if travel is required.
