Winter Weather Alerts in Effect Across the Lakeland
Heavy snow is on the way for northeastern Alberta and much of the Lakeland is now under weather alerts as the system moves in this afternoon.
Environment Canada has issued Special Weather Statements and Snowfall Warnings affecting Cold Lake, Bonnyville, St. Paul, Lac La Biche, Elk Point and Vermilion. Here is what it means locally as of 12 pm.
Special Weather Statement – Parts of the Lakeland
Some areas across the Lakeland are under a Special Weather Statement.
Snowfall totals of 10 to 20 cm are expected by Wednesday, with local amounts possibly reaching 30 cm. Snow will intensify later today, continue through Tuesday and taper off after that.
Drivers should expect reduced visibility at times and snow-covered highways, especially on rural and secondary roads between communities.
Snowfall Warning – Heavier Bands Possible
Other parts of the Lakeland are under a Snowfall Warning, meaning heavier and more impactful snowfall is expected.
In these areas, 10 to 25 cm of snow is forecast, with isolated areas seeing closer to 30 cm depending on how the bands set up.
What to Expect
Snow will begin to pick up later this afternoon and into the evening. Blowing snow may develop in open areas as winds increase, creating poor visibility along highways connecting Cold Lake, Bonnyville, St. Paul, Lac La Biche, Elk Point and Vermilion.
If you have travel planned, give yourself extra time and be prepared for winter driving conditions.
