It was a busy and exciting weekend at the RJ Lalonde Arena as the Bonnyville Pontiacs U15 Team 2 welcomed teams from across the region for a major home tournament.
With four Tier 1 teams and four Tier 2 teams in town, the tournament brought high-paced, physical hockey to Bonnyville at a key point in the season as teams prepare for playoffs just weeks away.
Lakeland Connect was on site throughout the weekend, catching up with coaches and players and capturing the energy inside the rink.
Strong start for the Pontiacs
In one of the featured matchups, the Pontiacs jumped out to an early lead, heading into the first intermission up 4–0. Assistant coach Chad Kully said the team’s pace and puck movement set the tone early.
“The boys came out moving their feet well and moving the puck better than we have the last couple games,” Kully said. “We were controlling the tempo, which was nice to see.”
While happy with the start, Kully noted there are still details to clean up as the team looks ahead to the postseason.
“Even though we’re passing better, we can still make some better passes. We had a few odd-man rushes where we could have made a better play,” he said. “But overall, it’s a good step in the right direction.”
With playoffs approaching, Kully emphasized how important the tournament is for building momentum and confidence.
“We went 0–2 last weekend, so getting back on the right foot here is huge, especially heading into our final league games,” he said.
Players shine on home ice
Pontiacs forwards Adam Langer and Cameron MacLellan were among the standouts during the opening period, contributing offensively and creating chances throughout the game.
McClellan, who scored one of the goals, broke down the play simply.
“I saw my winger and centre driving the net, so I got out front,” he said. “They lofted it to me and I batted it in.”
On another key play, McClellan picked up an assist after moving the puck from the half wall.
“I heard my teammate call for it, so I gave it to him down low and he did the rest,” he said.
Beyond the scoresheet, both players spoke about what keeps them coming back to the rink.
“I like the competition and playing with friends,” Langer said. “Scoring goals, making plays — this is our happy place.”
Community support on full display
The tournament also highlighted the strong community backing behind minor hockey in Bonnyville. Lakeland Connect’s coverage was made possible thanks to sponsors including Bonnyville Minor Hockey, Bonnyville Dental Clinic and Crazy Clean.
With packed stands, fast-paced games and playoffs right around the corner, the home tournament delivered exactly what fans love about minor hockey — effort, excitement and community pride
