Three Treated After Highway 16 Collision Near Range Road 20

Published On: February 3, 2026By

A two-vehicle collision on Highway 16 sent multiple emergency crews to the scene east of Kitscoty Monday night.

Shortly after 8 p.m., tones were dispatched to Blackfoot Fire and Rescue, Medavie Health Services West – Northeast Alberta, County Unit 9-1, and the Kitscoty RCMP detachment following a collision involving a pickup truck and a passenger car at Highway 16 and Range Road 20.

Emergency Response and Traffic Control

Upon arrival, emergency crews closed the eastbound lane of Highway 16 and diverted traffic south onto the service road. Firefighters and paramedics worked together to provide medical care and secure the scene.

Three patients were assessed and treated by paramedics. One individual was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Motorists Praised for Quick Action

County Fire Chief Kirk Hughes credited passing motorists for helping prevent further collisions before emergency services arrived.

“Due to the severity of the accident, the involved pick-up was nearly impossible to see,” Hughes said. “Had other drivers not stopped and indicated with their lights that a problem existed, more vehicles may have become involved. Their actions prevented the incident from becoming worse.”

Emergency officials extended special thanks to those who stopped to render aid and helped warn oncoming traffic in low-visibility conditions.

Highway Fully Reopened

At 9:17 p.m., Blackfoot Fire Chief John McGerrigle confirmed the scene was cleared and Highway 16 was fully reopened to traffic.

No further details have been released at this time.
