Operation Cold Start Targets Winter Vehicle Theft Across Alberta

Published On: January 29, 2026By

As cold temperatures settle in, Alberta RCMP and police partners across the province are stepping up efforts to curb a seasonal spike in vehicle theft.

From Feb. 1 to 7, 2026, Alberta RCMP will work alongside law enforcement agencies as part of Operation Cold Start, a province-wide initiative aimed at reducing thefts of unattended, idling vehicles during the winter months.

What the Police Are Doing

Throughout the week-long initiative, officers will check unattended vehicles to see whether they are idling, whether keys have been left inside, and whether the vehicle is properly secured. Police will also be engaging directly with the public to share practical tips on preventing vehicle theft.

The goal is prevention through education, not enforcement.

Why It Matters

Vehicle theft impacts more than just the owner. Stolen vehicles are often used in additional crimes or resold to unsuspecting buyers. These crimes also drive up insurance costs across communities.

Police say many winter thefts are opportunistic, happening when vehicles are left running to warm up.

“Leaving your vehicle running to keep it warm can be convenient for thieves looking to steal transportation to commit additional crimes,” said S/Sgt. Luke Halvorson of the Alberta RCMP Community Safety and Well-being Unit. “Operation Cold Start aims to reduce auto theft by educating Albertans on steps they can take to help keep their vehicle safe.”

Tips to Keep Your Vehicle Safe This Winter

RCMP are reminding Albertans of several simple steps that can significantly reduce the risk of theft:

  • Park in a visible, well-lit area if you cannot use a garage or driveway

  • Use visible anti-theft devices like steering wheel locks

  • Understand your vehicle’s security features, especially push-start systems that may allow driving without keys present

  • Never leave your vehicle unattended with the keys inside

  • Always lock your doors, even in your driveway or garage

  • Do not leave valuables inside your vehicle, including wallets, purses, garage door openers or personal documents

  • Most modern vehicles do not require a warm-up period. If warming is needed, stay with the vehicle

RCMP note that leaving a vehicle running and unattended also puts passengers, including children and pets, at risk.

Operation Cold Start runs across Alberta from Feb. 1–7, with police encouraging residents to take a few extra seconds this winter to lock their vehicles and protect them.
