Late-Night Tie, Road Wins and Tough Lessons for the Avalanche
With the Ronald McDonald House Winter Classic running Friday through Sunday at the A.G. Ross Arena, the U18 Avalanche squeezed in a late Thursday night home game against the Frog Lake T-Birds. A penalty-filled affair that wrapped up close to 11 p.m. ended in a 5–5 tie at the final buzzer.
“Wild Wyatt” Fontaine led the way with two goals and two assists. Brendan “Buzz Saw” Kadutski also scored twice and added an assist. Morris Amyotte chipped in with a single, while Braylee “Free Willy” Lesyk had a pair of helpers. Cade Sayers rounded out the scoring with an assist.
On Sunday afternoon, the U18s hit the road to the Border City to take on the Blazers and came home with a big 7–3 win. Free Willy had a strong outing with two goals and an assist. Tristan “Bob Cat” Brousseau and Odin St. Arnault each scored twice. Wild Wyatt added a goal and an assist, while Anton “A-Bomb” Braithwaite picked up two assists. Buzz Saw, Liam “Sledgehammer” Swedgen, Remington “Steel” Reynolds, Cade Sayers, and Bronsen “Bronko” Riley-Brock all found the scoresheet with one assist apiece.
The U15 Avalanche continue to find things challenging after being moved up to Tier 2. Losing close games by one or two is manageable, but bigger margins can wear on a group. Tier 3 may have been a better fit for this squad. On Sunday, they travelled to Vegreville and ran into a tough one, losing by double digits. Cade “Eagle Eye” Elliot and Jaxon “Magic” Marcoux scored the Avalanche goals, with William “Billy Bob” Ballas picking up an assist. Goaltender Theo “Longhorn” Loughran-Quinney faced a barrage, stopping shots all night while seeing 64 come his way.
The U13 Avalanche, recently moved down to Tier 4, are competing much more comfortably now. Wins and losses are coming in close games, which is exactly what you want at this stage. On Friday night in St. Paul, they edged the Canadiens 5–4. Jase “The Jackal” Malo and U11 call-up Maximus “To the Max” Laliberte each scored twice, while Grayson “Big Bang” Koppang added the other. Stetson “Shack” Reynolds and Rylan “Freight Train” Kryzanowski chipped in with two assists each, and Benny Boy Saddleback was solid between the pipes.
The U13s made the return trip to St. Paul on Sunday and picked up another win, this time 5–3. The Jackal and “Hurricane Kael” Large scored two goals apiece. Big Bang Koppang had a big night with a goal and two assists. Obrey “The Big O” John and Gabriel “Dangerous” Dion added assists. Getting the call in net, “General Lee” Barstad strapped on the big pads and faced 38 shots in the win.
