The Hive Youth Club Expands Support to Ages 11–25 in Bonnyville

Published On: November 30, 2025By

The Hive Youth Club by Kickstand in Bonnyville has broadened its age range to include young people aged 11 to 25, a shift designed to better reflect the needs of those who use the space. Although the expansion took effect on November 17, the Hive has been operating for more than 3 years as a safe, welcoming hub for local youth. It originally served ages 14 to 21.

Community-Driven Beginnings

The Hive was born from a collaboration of community partners, agencies, parents, and youth who came together to address gaps in local support. The central message from early discussions was clear: young people needed a single location where they could access mental health resources and general support without stigma or barriers.

Since opening, the Hive has worked with many partners to offer a changing mix of programmes, activities, and supports. Joining the Kickstand network has strengthened that work by connecting Bonnyville to a province-wide model of integrated youth services.

Part of a Provincial Network

Kickstand is a not-for-profit organization focused on improving youth mental health across Alberta. Its framework ensures services adapt to the needs of local youth through continued engagement and feedback. Being part of this network means young people can visit any Kickstand location and receive consistent, coordinated support.

Kickstand operates on six core pillars—mental health, substance-use support, physical and sexual health, Indigenous wellness, peer support, and social services. These priorities align closely with the Hive’s founding vision and community-based planning approach.

Why the Age Expansion Matters

Research and local data have shown that many older youth still face stigma when seeking mental health support, with access often delayed by hesitation or discomfort. Younger youth, however, tend to be more open in asking for help and talking about personal challenges. Expanding the age range to 11–25 helps bridge this gap and strengthens early intervention.

The updated model gives young people access to mental health services, social supports, and wellness programmes while also offering a safe hangout space where they can be themselves. The Hive emphasizes belonging, inclusion, and everyday support, recognizing that no problem is too small to bring forward.

Open Doors for Local Youth

With its expanded mandate and increased backing through Kickstand, the Hive Youth Club continues to grow as a central space for connection in Bonnyville. Young people aged 11-25 are welcome to drop in, seek support, or participate in programmes designed to help them navigate life’s challenges with confidence and community behind them.
