Sunnyside Manor, a long-standing cornerstone of seniors care in St. Paul, is set for a major transformation after receiving nearly $16 million in provincial funding for modernization and expansion. The investment means more seniors in the Lakeland will be able to stay close to home as they age.

A bigger, more accessible lodge

The project will expand Sunnyside Manor to almost 150 units, while upgrading existing suites to better meet residents’ mobility and safety needs. Modernisation may include walk-in showers, wider doorways, improved accessibility features, and refreshed common spaces.

Originally built in 1960, the lodge has seen several upgrades over the decades. This latest investment is its most significant yet and positions it to serve local seniors for generations to come.

Support from local leaders

MLA Scott Cyr says the funding is the result of ongoing advocacy and reflects the province’s commitment to seniors in the Lakeland.

“Sunnyside Manor has been a pillar of care and community in St. Paul for generations. I have been proud to advocate alongside the MD of St. Paul Foundation for this important expansion, which will help more seniors age with dignity and stay close to the people they love,” Cyr said.
“I am grateful to Minister Jason Nixon and our United Conservative government for supporting a project that strengthens the quality of life for the Albertans who have built the Lakeland into what it is today.”

Minister Jason Nixon, who oversees Assisted Living and Social Services, said seniors deserve to age in a way that makes them feel connected and supported.

“Alberta’s seniors want to age with dignity in the communities they’ve helped build, and projects like this help make that possible.”

The Town of St. Paul also welcomed the news.
Councillor Norm Noel said the project acknowledges a real and growing need:
“The town of St. Paul is thrilled that the provincial government has identified the housing needs of our seniors and look forward to working together to bring this much needed project to reality.”

Strengthening care in the Lakeland

The lodge is operated by the MD of St. Paul Foundation, a Housing Management Body under the Alberta Housing Act. With the new funding, Sunnyside Manor will soon offer more modern, comfortable and accessible homes for seniors who want to remain rooted in their community.

Work on the expansion signals another step forward for seniors care in the Lakeland, ensuring the region continues to grow with its aging population.
