Candlelight Vigil Brings Lakeland Community Together to Honour Victims and Survivors of Family Violence
Stepping Stones Crisis Society marks the start of Family Violence Prevention Month
The Stepping Stones Crisis Society brought the community together on November 1 for a Candlelight Vigil and Walk of Remembrance, marking the beginning of Family Violence Prevention Month in the Lakeland.
Held at the organization’s new facility, the evening focused on remembrance, unity, and awareness. The event invited residents to stand together in support of those affected by family violence, while honouring the lives lost and those continuing to heal. For those unable to attend in person, residents were encouraged to place a lit candle in their windows to show solidarity.
The vigil began with a land acknowledgement, followed by a candlelit walk symbolizing community support. Attendees then gathered for performances and sharing circles, offering a safe space for reflection and connection.
As part of its ongoing outreach, Stepping Stones is leading its Paint the Town Purple campaign throughout Bonnyville and Cold Lake this month. The initiative encourages local businesses to decorate in purple—the official colour of family violence awareness—to show support and help spark conversation.
In addition to public events, Stepping Stones provides year-round services including a 24-hour helpline, outreach programs, and educational initiatives such as Healthy Babies, Healthy Relationships and A Better Way, an eight-week course promoting healthy communication and awareness of abuse.
The organization will continue its awareness efforts later this month with its Festival of Peace Gala on November 29. This year’s event, themed A Victorian Yuletide Ball, will feature an evening of dining, music, and celebration, with proceeds supporting programs and services for individuals and families impacted by crisis.
Through community events, awareness campaigns, and direct support, Stepping Stones Crisis Society continues to be a vital lifeline in the Lakeland—reminding residents that no one is ever alone in their journey toward safety and healing.
