Elk Point Celebrates New Ice Plant for AG Ross Arena

Last Updated: October 27, 2025By

Elk Point’s A.G. Ross Arena has scored a major win for local recreation. Just last year, the arena received $750,000 through Alberta’s Active Communities Initiative—part of a $10 million provincial investment—to build a brand-new ice plant. On Saturday, MLA Scott Cyr joined local leaders and volunteers for the official ribbon-cutting and a first-hand look at the impressive upgrade.

“It’s always great to see funding come to our local communities, but it’s even better to see it put to work,” said Cyr. “Volunteers told me the old ice plant looked like it belonged in a museum. Now, the new system makes ice in just two and a half to three days instead of ten, taking a huge burden off volunteers and improving ice quality for everyone.”

Faster Ice, Stronger Community

The new ice system represents more than an equipment upgrade—it’s a community investment. Elk Point was one of only eight communities in Alberta to receive major funding under the first intake of the Active Communities Initiative. The full replacement project was estimated at roughly $1.5 million, making the provincial grant a crucial step toward completion.

The upgrade reduces energy costs, cuts volunteer hours, and keeps sports tourism local. Families now have a dependable rink where kids can learn to skate, teams can host tournaments, and residents can stay active close to home.

“This project shows what can happen when communities like Elk Point come together with government support,” added Cyr. “It builds pride, sustainability, and opportunity for the next generation of athletes.”

Team Effort

Cyr thanked Carrie Baumgardner and the Elk Point & District Agricultural Society for their leadership, as well as former Minister Joseph Schow for launching the program and current Minister Andrew Boitchenko for his ongoing support of rural Alberta recreation.

He also extended congratulations to Mayor-Elect Wanda Cochrane, adding, “I look forward to working together to build on this momentum for Elk Point.” Cyr also acknowledged former Mayor Parrish Tung for his years of service and thanked local businesses, residents, and volunteers “whose hard work keeps Elk Point strong.”
