Kilometres for a Cure Raises $7,000 for Bonnyville Cancer Clinic
The pedals have stopped spinning, the riders have crossed the finish line, and the Bonnyville Cancer Clinic is $7,000 stronger thanks to this year’s Kilometres for a Cure.
On August 23, Rene and Thomas led a group of cyclists on the 60-kilometre journey from Cold Lake’s Kinosoo Beach to the Bonnyville Hospital. Their goal: raise awareness and funds to support local cancer care.
And they delivered. The ride crested over $7,000 in donations this year, bringing the five-year total to more than $40,000.
“Absolutely unbelievable support from the community, from individuals to companies,” Thomas shared. “We’re so, so thankful for everyone who gave.”
The weather co-operated for the morning ride, and with support vehicles ensuring safety, the cyclists made the trek smoothly. The finish line at the Bonnyville Hospital was marked by cheers and celebration, a reminder of the impact small-town determination can have.
For Rene, a nurse at the hospital, the cause hits close to home. Many of the patients she sees daily benefit from the services of the Bonnyville Cancer Clinic. “Every dollar raised here stays here,” she said. “And that makes a real difference for the people in our community.”
As I summed it up at the hospital: “Events like this remind us that cancer doesn’t pick and choose who it affects — but together, we can make sure the support is there for anyone who needs it.”
With momentum building, Rene and Thomas are already looking ahead to next year’s ride, aiming to grow the pack of riders and continue building on the strong foundation of community support.
