Shattered glass, vandalized vehicles, and smashed menu boards are just some of the extensive damages allegedly done by a 23-year-old in Vermilion sometime this weekend.

Vermilion RCMP say that on Sunday, July 6, they received a report of damage to the Vermilion Provincial Building as well as six Sheriff vehicles that were parked on site.

A significant number of windows were smashed on and in the Vermilion Courthouse, Public Health windows, as well as the Sheriff’s vehicles.

The suspect had caused additional damage to the Children’s Rehab Service interior and exterior.

It was later discovered that the suspect had also caused damage to the McDonald’s in Vermilion.

Police say the initial estimate of the damages done to the courthouse and vehicles is set at upwards of one million dollars, while the damage to McDonald’s is estimated at around $50,000.

As a result of the investigation, Steven Bodurka, 23, a resident of Vermilion, was charged with:

  • Mischief to vehicle over $5000 (x6);
  • Mischief over $5000 (x2); and
  • Break and enter to commit mischief over $5000.

Bodurka was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody. He is to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in Vermilion today on July 8.

“I wanted to start by sending a special thank you to the two youths who reported the incident and stayed on scene in order to give their witness statement,” said Cpl. Brittany Pegg of the Vermilion RCMP.

“This perfectly highlights how community vigilance, combined with the efficiency of your Vermilion RCMP, effective partnerships and assistance from other RCMP detachments and specialized units, can allow us to keep Vermilion safe, together.”
